Description of the attraction

The current Fraumünster church was built on the site where the abbey of the same name was founded in 853. Its founder was Louis II the German. The abbey was created by him for his daughter Hildegarda. He endowed the Benedictine convent with the lands of Zurich, Uni and the Albis forests, and granted him immunity, taking under his protection. In 1218, thanks to Emperor Frederick II, the abbey gained territorial independence, and its political importance also increased: the abbey was given the opportunity to organize fairs and minting coins. At that time, Elizabeth Wetzikon was at the head of the monastery.

The Fraumünster Abbey could not survive the period of the Reformation. Only the church remained of it, which is open to the public to this day. Today Fraumünster is a church of Evangelical Christians. It is located in the heart of the old part of Zurich. Once the church of a nunnery, today it is a church in which sermons are held, services are held with an organ and a church choir, in which more than 100 singers and singers participate. The beautiful building is mainly made in Romanesque style, however, there are also elements of the Gothic. Every day, the magnificent stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti appear before the eyes of many visitors.

Spiritual and educational life is in full swing here. And although this is the smallest parish in Zurich, many parishioners from all over the city gather for Sunday services. There is a parish association "Fraumünster Association" with over 1100 members. The association organizes cultural events, organizes pilgrimages in Switzerland and abroad, carries out restoration work in the temple.
