Description of the attraction
Lough Mask is a freshwater limestone lake in County Mayo. It is the sixth largest lake in Ireland with an area of 20,000 acres. Lough Mask is located north of Lough Corrib and is connected to it by underground currents.
Lough Mask Lake is approximately 10 miles long and has a maximum width of about 4 miles. The depth of the lake in different parts of it differs significantly. Its average depth is 15 m, while the maximum depth reaches 58 m in some places. The southeastern part of the lake is rather shallow with many islets.
Due to the huge number of trout that live in Lake Lough Mask, it is especially popular with fishing enthusiasts. Every year, the World Cup for the title of "champion in trout fishing" is held in Cushlough Bay (near the town of Ballinrob).
It is worth noting that fishing is not the only entertainment on Loch Mask. There is also the Petersburg Outdoor Education Center near Bligh Island, where you will be offered a variety of water sports, including kayaking, canoeing, sailing, etc. You will get a lot of pleasure, and just walking through the picturesque surroundings of Lough Mask, or by going to one of the islets - for example, the island of Inishman, where the ruins of the ancient Celtic Church of St. Cormac, founded in the 6th century, are located.
However, it is worth visiting the lake for those interested in the paranormal. Researchers specializing in the field say suspicious activity has been recorded at Lough Mask. The island of Bligh is shrouded in legends, where, as legend says, the banshee lives - a very noticeable figure of Irish folklore.
