Description of the attraction

One of the most original churches in the world is the Grundtvig Church. This is a Lutheran temple located in the Bispebjerg district of Copenhagen. The Grundtvig Church is named after the Danish theologian, famous theologian and clergyman Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig.

Construction of the church began in 1921 by the famous Danish architect and engineer Peder Wilhelm Jensen-Klint. The final construction work on the building was completed in 1940 by Jensen-Klint's son Kaare Klint. The church was built in an expressionist style, where features of Gothic, Baroque, modern architectural styles, as well as the architecture of Danish village churches are intertwined. The western façade of the temple, which looks like a church organ, is especially original.

The structure was built of special hand-made yellow bricks. Clint decorated the nave of the church with stepped gables with double tops. The length of the inner hall of the temple is 76 meters in length, the height of the nave is 22 meters. The altar in the church was built by Kaare Klint from the sketches of Jensen-Klint from the same yellow brick as the church. Initially, the temple housed 1,863 chairs for parishioners, but since the gallery is closed today, no more than 1,300 visitors can be accommodated in the temple. On the north side of the cathedral's nave, there is a small church organ, erected here in 1940. The large church organ was delivered in 1956. Its structure contains 11 meter pipes, which are the longest organ pipes in Scandinavia.

Today the church is open to the public. Organ concerts are regularly held here.
