Description of the attraction
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johann in Tyrol is consecrated in honor of Saints John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and Catherine and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The temple is located in the very center of the city. This is one of the largest and most beautiful baroque churches in Tyrol.
The first church in St. Johann was built in the 7th-8th centuries by sedentary Bavarians. In honor of the patron saint of this temple - St. John - the village that spontaneously appeared nearby was later named. The first official mention of the temple at St. Johann is found in the annals of 1150. At the beginning of the 13th century, with the formation of a local parish, the church became a parish. In the middle of the XIV century, the local people chose the Virgin Mary as another patroness of the temple. The parish of St. Johann from 1446 was directly subordinate to the bishops of Chiemsee, who were considered the pastors of the local church. True, they never conducted services themselves, appointing a vicar for these purposes.
The modern building of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1723-1732, when the old church, which stood on the site of the current post office, was seriously damaged by floods. It was demolished only in 1725. The early Baroque building attracts attention with a simple triangular pediment on the main facade and two 55-meter towers with intricately curved domes. In the niches on the façade, statues created by the Kitzbühel sculptor Josef Martin Lenhauer can be seen. The marble portal is framed by two columns and is decorated with a relief on the theme of the life of St. John the Baptist.
The pearls of the richly decorated interior are the ceiling frescoes by Simon Benedict Faystenberger and the 15th century sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which was previously housed in an old, now ruined church.
