Even for those who often fly on airplanes, some of the flight crew's requests seem strange and inexplicable. Let's consider 6 requirements of flight attendants. Do I need to follow these orders? And if not, what will happen? Is it worth lifting tables and curtains, fastening belts, hiding carry-on luggage in the overhead racks? The answer is unequivocal - of course it is. But we will try to reveal the meaning of these strange requirements.
Why wear belts
Remember the joke that passengers with seat belts in their seats will be much easier to recognize in the event of a plane crash? This is really a joke. Aircraft belts are used for other reasons:
- at the start and during landing, so that in the event of emergency braking, a person does not crash into the front seat and be injured;
- during turbulence to improve passenger safety;
- as a sedative, when impressionable people, performing monotonous actions and following the honed movements of flight attendants, calm down and believe in the best, leaving panic overboard.
Why raise the window shades
This requirement of flight attendants also raises a lot of speculation. Some tourists believe that the raised curtains are a signal to airport workers that there are no terrorists on board, which means that everything is in order.
Other passengers believe that this way they will be able to independently control the operation of the engines: since the engine is off, you can breathe out calmly.
There is some truth in both the first and second rumors. Through the open curtains, the aircraft cabin is indeed visible, which rescuers will be able to appreciate in case of an emergency.
Also, through the windows, passengers and flight attendants can watch the moment of takeoff and landing of the liner. If something goes wrong, they will signal the pilots in time.
Finally, in the event of a disaster, there will be no electric lighting in the passenger compartment, so the light will only come through the windows.
Why hide carry-on luggage
It often happens that there are empty places next to the passenger where you can put your bag and put your outerwear. Flight attendants, on the other hand, insist on storing all luggage on special shelves or hiding it under the seats in front. What are the reasons for such requests?
Most of the rules on board are designed to ensure that the flight is as safe as possible for passengers. Imagine that an airplane makes an emergency landing or suddenly slows down before it can take off. A heavy bag next to you flies forward through the cabin, causing injury to other passengers.
Luggage placed under the seats is considered securely secured. Overhead luggage racks can be opened by any shaking, and bulky items from them can fall on the passengers' heads. There have been cases when bags falling from a height made people disabled. Therefore, there is an unspoken rule - to hide only light bags and coats or jackets upstairs.
Duty-free glass bottles of alcohol are recommended to be placed under the seats.
Why luggage can't be parked at emergency exits
Everyone knows that on planes near emergency exits there are very comfortable seats with plenty of legroom. Usually such chairs go to strong men who, in the event of an accident, will be able to open those very exits.
Everyone dreams of getting tickets for these seats, but these seats also have a significant drawback: flight attendants forbid putting luggage under the seats of the nearest seats. The fact is that bags can be in the aisle at the most inopportune moment when people have to be evacuated. Therefore, carry-on baggage will have to be thrown onto the overhead racks.
Why put the backs of the chairs vertically
The requirement to raise the seat backs during takeoff and landing should not be ignored. In this way, flight attendants prepare passengers for emergency situations. If an accident occurs, then there will be no time to bring the backs to an upright position, and some passenger will hesitate because of a half-lowered seat and will not be able to escape.
Also, a lowered seat can lead to the death of the passenger himself. Indeed, in the event of an accident, you need to tilt your head to your knees, which a person may simply not have time to do.
Finally, stewardesses can better see sitting upright, rather than lying in the seats of passengers.
Why raise tables
If the table is in the assembled position, there is room in front of the passenger for maneuvering, which will probably come in handy during an accident. It is easier to get out of a chair with a table removed if a disaster strikes. And access for rescuers will be wider.
No one will bump into a closed table if the plane urgently slows down. Also, heavy objects - books, laptop, etc. will not fall from it at this moment and will not fly forward. Any weighty thing in difficult conditions can cause serious injury.
