Crete, the largest Greek island, needs no advertising. All tourists have long been aware of its many attractions, amazingly beautiful landscapes, convenient beaches and excellent infrastructure. Anyone, even the most discerning traveler, will be pleased with their holidays in Crete. People come here with friends and family, because wandering around Crete alone is nonsense. It is better to share this pleasure with loved ones.
A traveler planning a vacation with children thinks first of all about their convenience. Where to go to Crete with children, what to see and where to stay - the experience of other parents will help in solving these issues.
The beaches of Agii Apostoli
The famous city of Chania is the main city of the western nome of the same name of Crete. In Chania, you can walk, enjoying a bizarre mixture of Venetian and Oriental exoticism, but it is better to live with children in the hotels of the cozy village of Agii Apostoli, that is, the Holy Apostles, which is located in the vicinity of Chania. This village receives thousands of tourists every year. The inhabitants of Crete themselves prefer to rest here.
Agii Apostoli got its name from a small church built on the shores of one of the local bays. There are two such bays in total. They are located between three narrow headlands that cut the sea surface. Local beaches, as if by nature itself, were created for kids. Even 50 meters from the shore, it will still be shallow here, which means it is safe for bathing crumbs. There are almost never waves in Agii Apostoli, the most severe storms bypass this place. The water near the coast is clean and transparent, I can't even believe that the port of Chania is located just a few kilometers from the village. The beaches are covered with clean sand. The water near the coast heats up very quickly, so the swimming season opens here at the end of April.
As places to stay, you can choose both a hotel, and they are not cheap here, and private apartments. The latter is supported by the fact that you can stay in a large company, as well as not depend on the restaurant menu and cook yourself. There are several large supermarkets near the village of Agii Apostoli.
Two villages - a lot of fun
Between Chania and Rethymno there are two villages that continue each other, merging into a single whole - Georgioupolis and Kavros. They are famous for their wide sandy beaches, which are almost 9 km long. There are no secluded bays, but there are mountains and a variety of entertainment.
What vacationers will find in Georgioupolis and Kavros:
- shallow and safe sea, but cooler than at Agii Apostoli;
- Lake Kournas, located a few kilometers from the villages. It is famous for the fact that turtles live here, which are allowed to feed;
- an almost toy train, which is considered the most important local attraction, delivers children and their parents to the lake. You can ride catamarans on the lake;
- a small zoo Fun Park, where there is a pen with pets that are allowed to get close. The kids pet them, feed them and take care of them.
You can stay in Georgioupolis and Kavros in a rented apartment or in hotels. There are no mid-level hotels here. Either luxurious luxury complexes or unpresentable small hotels are built along the coast.
There, beyond the mountains
In the northern part of Crete, on the shores of the Cretan Sea, is the village of Bali. Previously, only fishermen lived here, but now tourists with small children come here. Bali stretches along four small bays. One beach is pebbly, others are covered with dark sand of volcanic origin.
Bali is reliably protected from the piercing winds by several mountains. When a storm is declared all over the island and the beaches are closed, vacationers continue to bask in the sand in the village of Bali. At this time, tourists from all Cretan resorts come here, so the beaches are crowded. This can be attributed to the disadvantages of Bali. Hotels marked with a different number of stars are located on higher elevations. It can be difficult to climb to them from the sea even for physically developed people. This can be a little problem for children.
The local hotel Stone Village has a small zoo that will surely appeal to children of all ages.
Hersonissos water parks
In the eastern part of Crete there is the city of Hersonissos. Here, on the only sandy beach in the city, Star Beach, attracts both tourists and locals from all over the area. The beach with fine golden sand is also famous for the fact that there is a small water park near it, where all children are allowed free of charge. Here are collected pools and water attractions - the ultimate dream of many kids.
If tourists want variety, then you can go to the larger water park "Water City", which is located outside the city. Local tour operators often offer excursions there.
Another attraction of Hersonissos that kids will love is the aquarium that contains Mediterranean fish. There is a dinosaur park in the neighboring village of Gouves.
