At present, the question of how to obtain Syrian citizenship is somewhat irrelevant, since the name of the country must appear in the list of the most important political news due to well-known events. Although, on the other hand, all military and political conflicts are ever resolved, so it does not hurt to find out how things are in the Syrian Arab Republic in the field of civil law.

Unfortunately, the information is extremely scarce, the state is rather closed, on the Internet it is in no hurry to advertise its laws and rights. It is even difficult to say what legal acts regulate the issue of obtaining citizenship in Syria. The most demanded issue in the near future will be the issue of restoring the lost citizenship, the return of refugees.

How can you get Syrian citizenship?

As in many countries of this small planet, in the Syrian Arab Republic today there are several grounds for obtaining citizenship, and it can be obtained automatically, a priori, subject to certain conditions. Part of the population must go through certain procedures, fulfill the requirements before becoming holders of the coveted passports. In the list, the following reasons can be noted (by the way, typical for other countries of the world): by origin; through naturalization.

An analysis of the grounds on which citizenship can be obtained automatically or by going through the procedures shows that there is no principle of “birth right”. This means that the automatic right to be considered a citizen of the Syrian Arab Republic does not work for a child who was born on the territory of this state.

Obtaining citizenship based on the principle of "descent" has its own nuances. A child whose father is a Syrian citizen automatically receives documents of a Syrian citizen, while the place of birth of the baby, the mother's nationality or citizenship will not be taken into account.

A child born to a mother who is a Syrian national will only be registered as a Syrian citizen if his father is unknown or the father is a stateless person.

Marriage is the only opportunity to become a citizen

The Syrian Arab Republic, due to its geographical location, historical realities and the current political situation, remains a closed state. The authorities of the country have put forward stringent requirements for those persons who dreamed or would like to integrate into the local society, and eventually receive the rights of citizens.

At the moment, there is only one way to acquire Syrian citizenship - it is to marry an indigenous resident, and it is important that he has a government-issued passport. The second, no less stringent condition that must be unconditionally fulfilled is living legally married in the country for ten years.

Other issues related to Syrian citizenship

The institution of dual citizenship in the Syrian Arab Republic is recognized. But in reality, it is extremely difficult to obtain citizenship of this country if you have another citizenship. At the same time, the authorities made a statement that if a person has passports of two states, first of all he will be considered a Syrian citizen, and only then a citizen of another state.

The voluntary loss of Syrian citizenship is extremely difficult because the authorities are reluctant to do so. The Syrian Information Center says that since the institution of second citizenship is in place, there is no point in renouncing the citizenship of the country. It is clear that in many countries this institution does not work, therefore people officially refuse it, but the Syrian authorities formally continue to consider them their citizens, as if automatically returning citizenship when these persons cross the borders of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Due to the fact that active hostilities are currently underway on the territory of this Arab state, there is a category of Syrian citizens who have no right to renounce the citizenship of the country. This category includes citizens who are suitable for military duties by age.

Many citizens prefer not to apply for citizenship, stopping at the stage of obtaining visas. Although the visa is valid for six months, it is allowed to reside on it on the territory of the country only for 15 days. A simplified receipt regime has been introduced for citizens of the Russian Federation, as well as for countries belonging to the CIS. Representatives of these states do not issue visa documents at home, but receive them according to a simplified scheme when crossing the state border of Syria.
