The southern capital of Russia is located on the high bank of the Don. The first thing that catches your eye when you drive up to Rostov-on-Don is the golden domes of the main temple of the city. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos was built according to the standard design of the architect K. A. Tones. Rostovites believe that it was created on the model of the famous Cathedral of the Savior in Moscow. As befits a large city, the Rostov Church is located in its very heart.

The real adornment of Cathedral Square is a white-stone seventy-five-meter bell tower with gilded domes, built using elements of Classicism and Renaissance. Rostovites say that the ringing of its main bell was heard at a distance of over 40 miles. During the Great Patriotic War, the two upper tiers of the bell tower were destroyed. It was restored in its original form only for the 250th anniversary of the city.
Right in front of the church on the square there is a monument to St. Demetrius, Metropolitan of Rostov - the heavenly patron of the city, and it is from here that many sightseeing tours begin to the ringing of bells.
Soborny lane
From the square to the main city park, there is a small lane of the same name, Cathedral of the same name, literally a few blocks away. In the spring, this picturesque corner of old Rostov became a new attraction of the city - for the May holidays it was made a pedestrian one, and benches and flower beds were installed in the place of the roadway, flowers and ornamental trees were planted. The local coffee shop, for the sharply increased number of visitors, has set up additional tables with large romantic umbrellas right at its entrance, and now the invigorating smell of coffee is spreading around the lane around the clock. Street musicians and couples in love quickly took a fancy to the comfortable place. In the evening, a huge web of LED lights is stretched over this entire space, so even on a cloudy evening there is an opportunity to make a date under the starry sky. At the intersection of the lane with the main street of the city, a bronze sculpture "Rostov Plumber" was erected. A bronze two-meter plumber is stroking a cat sitting on a radiator. The cold weather is still far away, but the residents of Rostov are already talking that this battery will be warm during the heating season. By the way, in Rostov this is not the only sculptural ensemble with the participation of a cat. Across the street, almost opposite, at the entrance to the central city park. Gorky, there is a sculptural composition "Peddler". This is a tribute to the bright merchant past of the city. They say that if you put a coin to a peddler and stroke the neck of his cat, he will ensure good luck in business.
Unlike most large European cities, the central avenues of Rostov-on-Don are parallel to each other, so it is almost impossible for even an unorganized tourist to get lost here. Due to the large number of sunny days, both Rostovites and guests of the capital love to stroll along the green streets of Rostov-on-Don, admiring the houses built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These times are importantly referred to as the "Silver Age of the Southern Capital".
The historical part of Rostov-on-Don is fundamentally different from the modern sleeping areas of the city, which grow along its perimeter like multi-storey myceliums.
But the most beautiful of the streets of Rostov, of course, st. Bolshaya Sadovaya. Most of its buildings appeared under A. Baikov, who became the legendary mayor of Rostov in the sixties of the 19th century. During his rule, kerosene lanterns and cobbled sidewalks, a stock exchange, an embankment and parks appeared in the city. The development of the port and railways contributed to the transformation of Rostov-on-Don at the end of the 19th century into a large trading city, which was called "Russian Chicago". Wealthy merchants and bankers from all over the south of Russia invited famous architects of their time to Rostov. Having outlived their owners, many buildings still bear their famous names.

A real architectural gem of Rostov-on-Don can be called the building of the City Duma and the Administration of the city of Rostov-on-Don, the work of the famous Moscow architect A. N. Pomerantsev, the author of the GUM building on Red Square in Moscow. The main building is considered an example of castle architecture - with a rectangular plan and an inner courtyard. Windows of various shapes and sizes, protruding bay windows, high domes, rich decor decorating the symmetrical facade - all this gives the building a special solemnity and significance.
The splendor and grace of the building invariably attracts the eyes of tourists and rarely someone passes by without taking a photo as a souvenir. According to the city economic department, the facades of the building are decorated with 256 sculptures and architectural details.
With the onset of dusk, thanks to artistic lighting, the building of the City Duma and the City Administration is amazingly transformed and becomes even more elegant.
The building of the Profitable House of the trading company "S. Gench-Ogluev and I. Shaposhnikov"
The building of the Profitable House of the trading company "S. Gench-Ogluev and I. Shaposhnikov" is located at this crossroads - the first multi-storey building in Rostov-on-Don and one of the first works of Pomerantsev. The richness of the decor grows vertically: panels, cartouches, stucco heads, garlands with bunches of fruits, winged wands of Hermes - this is not the whole list of the building's decoration.
The building of the Profitable House of K. I. Yablokov
Nearby is the building of the Profitable House of K. I. Yablokov, erected in 1898. designed by the city architect E. M. Gulin. In the symmetrical composition of its facade, the central position is occupied by an unusual round window of the second floor with an openwork balcony decorated with an elegant lattice. Among the variety of stucco decoration, a winged staff entwined with snakes and masks of the Greek god Hermes, the patron saint of trade, stand out. At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the first cinemas (electrobiographers) in Rostov was opened here.
The building of the Volzhsko-Kamsky bank
If you walk along the main street to the east, you will see a ceremonial building with massive letters "Palace of Children's Creativity", and near the main entrance you can see a small preserved historical inscription "Volzhsko-Kamsky Bank" - at the end of the 19th century one of the largest banks in Russia. For the construction of its own building, the board of the bank invited the Kharkov architect A. N. Beketov. The luxurious building has stood on Bolshaya Sadovaya for more than a century and, it seems, has not lost at all either in size or in its original appearance. All architectural details of the facade still emphasize reliability and inviolability: high-relief Atlantean masks in winged helmets, emblems under the cornice are the personification of divine protection, griffins are faithful keepers of gold and treasures, laurel wreaths are a sign of valor and victory.
House of M. N. Rough
If you go down the street. B Sadovaya to the railway station, it is impossible to walk past a small two-story mansion with a turret. Its facade, decorated with caryatids and atlantes, flowerpots and masks, is an amazing mixture of Baroque, Renaissance and Classicism. Like every historic building, this charming mansion has its own legend. Not confirmed by official documents, but popular with Rostovites, there is a romantic love story about this house of a wealthy merchant who gave the house to his beloved.
Parallel to Bolshaya Sadovaya, there is another pedestrian street, beloved by students and tourists - st. Pushkinskaya. The shady square and long paths are ideal for long leisurely walks. And the special atmosphere of small hospitable cafes, nestled in old mansions, keeps echoes of the urban legends of the Silver Age.
S. V.'s mansion Petrova
The architecture of the old mansion of S. V. Petrova literally bewitches modern residents of megacities, accustomed to the minimalism of glass-concrete high-rise buildings. This building houses the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts. Nowadays, the largest collection of Russian, foreign and modern fine art in the south of Russia is presented to visitors. Here are the paintings of such masters as I. E. Repin, I. I. Shishkin, I. K. Aivazovsky, I. I. Levitan. The townspeople have at least three versions of the legend concerning the history of the appearance of this house and the history of the life of its owners, and, believe me, each deserves a separate story.
Ivan Suprunov's mansion
Ivan Suprunov's mansion on the street. Pushkinskaya will be interesting to tourists not only for its architecture, but also for its unusual biography. They say that the house was originally built in distant Italy. The mansion was attracted by the Rostov businessman Ivan Suprunov, who came on a business visit to Europe. The Rostov merchant made an incredibly lucrative offer to the owner of the house, which he could not refuse. The house was dismantled and transported to Rostov-on-Don, where it was reassembled on Pushkinskaya Street.
A whole parade of architectural masterpieces, mentioned by us today, is located in the center of Rostov-on-Don, literally a stone's throw from each other. On such a small excursion in the open air, a tourist will only need a couple of hours, but Rostov-on-Don is ready to surprise endlessly.
