Burgas is a very popular and inexpensive resort in Bulgaria, located on the shores of the Burgas Bay. Its surroundings are rich in historical monuments and beautiful protected areas. Excursion to Sozopol
Sozopol is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria, located 34 km southeast of Burgas, on a small peninsula in the Black Sea. In 610 BC. the Greeks founded a colony here, calling it Apollonia in honor of the god Apollo. Excavations in the city began quite recently, in 2000, but archaeologists have already unearthed wells and basements of ancient Greek buildings here.
The city is covered with legends. In 2012, during excavations, two medieval burials were discovered, the ribcages of the skeletons in which were pierced with iron wedges, which suggests that the deceased, in the opinion of their contemporaries, were vampires.
In the old part of the city, buildings of the 19th - 20th centuries prevail. The buildings of the post office and the fishing school are especially interesting. The pride of Sozopol is a very unusual church of the Holy Mother of God of the 15th century, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Outwardly inconspicuous, half hidden under the ground, it is famous for its unique internal architecture, icons and iconostasis made by local woodcarvers.
Sozopol is a small, cozy town. On the cobblestone streets, locals sell a variety of handicrafts. Along the embankment there are cafes and small restaurants where you can eat deliciously, take a break and then take a river tram down the Ropotamo River, on the banks of which there is a national reserve with wild animals, turtles and pelicans. Sometimes dolphins come here. The ancient Thracian sanctuary Beglik Tash is located on a high bank among the centuries-old oaks. There are other exciting excursions from Burgas, and one of the most interesting leads west into the depths of Bulgaria, to the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The first people appeared in these places as early as the 5th millennium BC, here they worshiped the sun god.
