This large city, located in the Southern Urals, has an impressive list of achievements and titles. The loudest - "the world's largest center of ferrous metallurgy", "the city of labor valor and glory." The history of Magnitogorsk began with the development of an iron ore deposit, and thanks to this mineral, a small village before our eyes turned into a large industrial city.
History of Magnitogorsk before 1917
The history of Magnitogorsk in a brief retelling can be started with an important event that occurred in 1740, when Baim Kidraev, a tarhan, showed Moscow guests the magnetic mountain Atach, where local residents were mining iron ore.
The results of the tests pleasantly surprised the guests from the center, and already in 1743, on the banks of the Yaik River, a fortress was founded, which was named Magnetic. And the mountain was quickly taken over by the breeder Tverdyshev and his son-in-law; in 1759, active mining of iron ore began here, which was sent to the Beloretsk plant for smelting.
The year 1774 became memorable for the fortress - the army of the famous Yemelyan Pugachev attacked the fortification and occupied the fortress. The rebels understood the importance of this settlement and tried to take it into their own hands. The uprising was soon suppressed, the inhabitants of the fortress and the surrounding settlements returned to their usual peaceful work.
In the 19th century, thanks to rapidly developing technologies, the extraction of iron ore from Magnitnaya Mountain began to go much more intensively, and volumes increased significantly. New settlements appeared around the fortress, forming the so-called Magnetic Yurt.
The development of the region could have been facilitated by the appearance of a railway branch, there were plans to connect Magnitnaya and Beloretsk, the First World War prevented. The railway appeared here already under Soviet rule, after the end of the Second World War.
After the 1917 revolution
Information about the revolutionary events that took place in Petrograd in 1917 did not immediately reach the residents of Magnitnaya. Only in April 1918 did the Red Guards appear here to establish the power of the Soviets. A new stage in the life of the settlement began, but the goals of the new government were the same. The plans include the search for new deposits, the extraction of iron ores and other minerals, the construction of large metallurgical plants.
And today the city is being actively built, the existing facilities are being modernized. Magnitogorsk remains the flagship of the Russian ferrous metallurgy.
