The history of Evpatoria is very long, this city was known even in antiquity. Then its name was different: the Greeks called him Kerkinitis. It was a Greek colony founded by Greeks from Asia Minor. It turns out that the city is already 25 centuries old.

Early history

The settlement existed here for a long time. Since coins of its own minting were found here, historians concluded that the city had its own statehood. Trade with the Scythian nomads flourished here. Local residents cultivated the land, grew cereals and grapes, from which they made wine. The proximity to the sea allowed fishing.

The city then experienced dependence on the Chersonesos state. But this did not affect its prosperity. However, already in the II century BC. Kerkinitida was captured by the Scythians, who needed a convenient port. The Scythians made devastation in the city, so the local population turned for support to Mithridad Eupator, the Pontic king. Help arrived in the form of troops led by Diophantus, who defeated the Scythians and their allies - Roksolan. However, the inhabitants of Kerkinitida did not return to their city.

Wars

In the Middle Ages, Crimea was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, so the settlements here already had Turkic place names. Evpatoria, which received the name Gozlev, did not bypass this. A powerful fortress was erected here. However, the fortification was also used for commercial purposes. But the Russo-Turkish War nevertheless turned a page in the history of this city: in 1774 the Ottomans stopped claiming the Crimea, which was secured by the Kyuchuk-Kainardzhi Peace Treaty.

It was then in memory of Yevpator that the city received a new name from Empress Catherine II. Her Greek past was clearly to her taste, in comparison with the Turkish one. The 19th century in the history of the city is a century of construction, darkened only by the Crimean War. Evpatoria in this century gains fame as a Karaite cultural center. By the end of this century, Evpatoria was valued as a resort town.

Soviet period

The strategic position of the city did not allow him to constantly lead a measured life, full of peace and relaxation. Crimea experienced first the Red Terror, then, after a relative calm, - the occupation by the German-Romanian troops. It was in 1941, and our troops managed to free Evpatoria from them only in 1944. However, the upheavals were not destined to end, the Nazis were driven out, but part of the local population - Crimean Tatars, Bulgarians, Greeks and Armenians on Stalin's orders were deported to other regions of the USSR. It all happened in the same difficult war years.

Over time, life here returned to normal, returned to the resort rails: sanatoriums of various profiles were built; scientific institutions for balneology were founded.

This is the history of Evpatoria briefly, but today's events indicate that new pages will soon appear in it.
