The main rivers of Nigeria are the Niger River, which gave the name to the country itself, and its large tributary Benue.
Forcados river
Forkados is one of Niger's shipping lanes, used for this purpose since the beginning of the twentieth century.
The source of Forcados is the place where the Niger River forks into two rivers - Forcados and Nun (near the town of Abokh). The river flows through swampy and practically deserted areas covered with mangrove thickets. Forcados flows into the Atlantic waters near the Gulf of Benin.
The total length of the current is 198 kilometers. The tributaries by the river are all right: Asse; Warry. The river flows through the territories of several towns: Burutz; Patani; Sagbama; Bomadi.
Sokato river
The river bed runs through the lands of the northwestern part of the country. The source of the river is geographically located in the district of Funtua (Katsina state). The total length of the current is 600 kilometers. The Sokato Current crosses four states: Katsina; Zamfars; Sokoto; Kebbie.
The banks of the river are actively used by local residents. Various crops are grown here, in particular, sugar cane, rice, tobacco, peanuts and others. The river plays an important role in the life of the peoples living on its banks and in the valley, since it is practically the only source of water.
Nun River
Nun is the longest arm of the Niger and is perceived as the main extension of the river. Its total length is approximately 160 kilometers.
The Nnu current passes through the territory of two towns - Odi and Kayama. Near the latter, a modern bridge is thrown across the river.
In the nineteenth century, Nun was one of the main trade routes. Later (1963) oil fields were discovered on its shores, and today the transportation of "black gold" is carried out along the pipeline laid along the coast.
River Cross
The Cross River passes through the territory of Cameroon (lands of the Department of Manyu) and Nigeria. The total length of the current is 489 kilometers. In Nigeria, the Cross separates the Cross River State from Ebonya and Akwa Ibom, and then flows into the waters of the Gulf of Guinea. Efik tribes live on the banks of the river.
Veme river
The Veme River, or, as the locals call it, Ueme, passes through the territory of two West African states - Nigeria and Benin. The total length of the river is 480 kilometers. At the same time, most of the current takes on the role of a natural border between these states.
The total area of the river basin is nearly 47,000 square kilometers. The river ends its path, flowing into the waters of the Gulf of Guinea (near the town of Cotonou).
The water in Vema is always warm. The temperature ranges from + 26-32 degrees (the indicator depends on the season).
