Amsterdam is one of the largest port cities in Europe and the capital of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of North Holland. The streets of Amsterdam are known for their contrasts. The city is full of life against the background of ancient buildings. Light drugs are sold here legally.

The city is spread over swampy lands. Many buildings were built on piles. Previously, these were wooden piles, and today they are concrete. Amsterdam is famous for canals, of which there are over 90. Its historic center looks very neat due to the houses that are close to each other.

Dam Square

It is the centerpiece of the capital of the Netherlands. The most popular sights of Amsterdam are located in this square. It hosts national holidays and events. Dam Square is located in the historic center. It has a rectangular shape and unites many main streets: Rokin, Damrak, etc. In the west of Dam Square there is the Royal Palace and the Wax Museum.

The area is full of interesting objects, so it is considered a separate tourist area. The Royal Palace is a masterpiece of architecture as it was built on stilts. This is an example of the classic Dutch style.

Main streets

The main streets of Amsterdam are Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk. Nieuwendijk Street starts from the Central Station Square. It continues to the vast Dam Square, parallel to the Damrak Highway. In the area of the square, this street turns into another artery and goes to the Muntplein square. The streets in question are where the best shops in the city are located. The Kalverstraat is home to the Peter and Paul Church and the Amsterdam Museum. A popular shopping street is the Leidseplein, which runs through three beautiful canals and reaches the flower market.

Rokin

Rokin belongs to the main streets of the city. It runs from Dam Square to Monetnaya Square. On the site of this highway, there was once a section of the river bed. Gradually, an embankment was formed along the river, and part of the channel was filled up. Currently, excursions on pleasure boats depart from this street.

Museum quarter

This is the area of Amsterdam that epitomizes luxury life. It was formed in the 19th century and was intended for wealthy people. Today, amazing architecture has been preserved there. The square of the same name is located in the Museum Quarter, P. C. Hooftstraat with chic boutiques, Vondel Park and other facilities. In Vondel Park there is an open-air theater and a wonderful film museum.
