The rivers of Greece are few in number and relatively short, but they are characterized by a very fast flow. Many of them burst out of the limestone caves in violent streams. The country's rivers are extremely interesting for lovers of river tourism and rafting.
Evrotas river
Evrotas (also called Eurotas) is a small Greek river, with a total length of only eighty-two kilometers. And yet Eurotas is the largest river in the Laconia region. Eurotas ends its journey, flowing into the waters of the Ionian Sea. According to legend, the waters that periodically flood the plain were taken to the sea by Evrot. It was from his name that the river got its name.
Alyakmon River
Alyakmon is the longest river in the country, with a total length of 322 kilometers. The source of the river is located in the Pindus mountain range (near the border with Albania). The mouth is the Thermaikos Gulf (Aegean Sea).
Acheron River
Translated from the ancient Greek language, Acheron sounds like "the river of sorrow." And for fans of Greek mythology, Acheron is a special place. After all, it was she who was the border between the kingdom of the living and the dead, and it was along her that the gloomy Charon transported the souls of dead people to the afterlife kingdom of Hades. The great Dante believed that the first circle of hell lies behind Acheron. It sounds a little creepy, but this is what the river attracts.
The length of the river is only fifty-eight kilometers, but at the same time its course has time to change three times. In the upper reaches, Acheron makes its way along a rocky hill. Then its waters are squeezed by a gloomy and very narrow gorge, and only after entering the plain, the river calmly carries its waters to the coast of the Ionian Sea.
The river offers all conditions for trekking and rafting.
Kurtalis river in Crete
Kurtaliotis is also known under a different name - the Big River. It runs along the bottom of the Kurtaliot Gorge. The river never dries up and the highest water level is recorded near the church of St. Nicholas, where it collapses with numerous waterfalls.
Going beyond the gorge, the river carries its waters through the Prevelis beach and flows into the sea. The water in the river is very cold and at the same time absolutely transparent. On the beach, this kind of entertainment is popular - to get out of the warm sea water and plunge into the icy waters of Kurtaliotis.
River Nestos
Another large river in Greece is two hundred and forty kilometers long. It is located in the northern part of the country, not far (only thirty kilometers) from the city of Kavala. The mouth of the river is the waters of the Aegean Sea.
Nestos is an extraordinarily beautiful river located in one of the most picturesque regions of northern Greece. It is surrounded by high mountain ranges, and the shores are covered with coniferous forests. On the banks of the river there are many tourist routes for lovers of ecological tourism, and the waters of Nestos are used by lovers of rafting.
