Take a look at the map of the Georgian capital to see the districts of Tbilisi - a detailed acquaintance with them will allow you to quickly find your way in an unfamiliar city and get to places of interest. Tbilisi districts include Mtatsminda, Vera, Avlabar, Vake, Chugureti, Ortachala, Didube, Saburtalo, Old Town, Sololaki.
Description and attractions of the main areas
- Mtatsminda: famous for the Pantheon (is the burial place of famous cultural figures, for example, Griboyedov), the Kashveti temple (you should come here to worship the icon of St. David, as well as admire the altar decorated with stone carved lace), the Museum of Arts (here you can admire paintings, icons, figurines, dishes, Indian shawls, Persian and Turkish carpets).
- Avlabar: famous for the Sameba Cathedral (its walls are decorated with icons and frescoes, and the floor is decorated with marble combined with picturesque mosaics), the palace of Queen Darijan (in addition to the palace, there is a church decorated with elements of Arab architecture), Rike Park (has walking alleys, a bridge, a swing, a climbing wall, flower beds, “dancing” fountains, a stage for performances by creative teams, a labyrinth and a playground), the Metekhi temple (inside you can see the tomb of the great martyr Shushanik Ranskaya), the ruins of the Avetaran cathedral.
- The old city: interesting for the Zion Cathedral (which is the repository of the cross of St. Nina), the Narikala fortress (tourists are attracted by the preserved towers and the Church of St. Nicholas built on this territory in the 12th century - its interior is decorated with frescoes depicting Georgian history and biblical scenes), Anchiskhati temple (the facade of the building is decorated with an old medallion with a cross; here you can see old icons and listen to Georgian church chants), sulfur baths (inside the existing baths there are pools with mineral water, the temperature of which is + 37˚ C; in addition, massage services are provided here). Travelers are advised to walk along Baratashvili Avenue - there you can see a sculptural composition in the form of people dancing in a circle (“Berikaoba”) and the remains of the city wall. It is worth noting that, if you wish, you can “fly” over the roofs of the Old City using the cable car (it will take anyone a couple of minutes to the Narikala fortress) - you will be able to see a lot of interesting things and take a photo of what you saw.
Where to stay for tourists
Tbilisi offers its guests a wide range of hotels, hostels and rented apartments. It should be borne in mind that the more expensive are the central districts of the city - Mtatsminda, Avlabar, Vake.
Are you not strapped for funds and do not have time to choose a suitable area? Give preference to hotels in the Old Town. And in search of inexpensive hostels, it is advisable to go to the Chagureti area. If you wish, you can settle in the Saburtalo area, but there is nothing interesting here from a historical point of view.
