One of the most populous countries in the Old World, the Kingdom of the Netherlands is located on the shores of the North Sea and most of its territory is below zero. The proximity of the sea and low-lying terrain affect not only the climate, but also the nature of Holland.

Typical Dutch

  • The climate in the Kingdom of the Netherlands can hardly be called favorable and comfortable. It is always humid and windy here, which is caused not only by the proximity of the North Sea, but also by the dense river network, which forms a vast deep delta at the confluence of the Scheldt with the Rhine and the Meuse.
  • The typical Dutch climate is cool summers and mild but very humid winters. However, even in summer, a rare day goes by without rain, and therefore an umbrella or a raincoat is an indispensable attribute of a local resident leaving the house for a walk or on business.
  • Winter temperatures often drop below zero and the channels are covered with ice. In the old days, this became an excuse to put on skates and use them instead of public transport. Today, the Dutch skating business is less and less likely to be seen.
  • The relief of the Netherlands is flat lowlands in the northern part and small hills in the southeast. The lowest point in the country is located at 6, 74 meters below sea level, and the highest is the town of Walserberg in the southeast, which is 322 meters high.

National parks

You can get acquainted with the nature of Holland, its fauna and flora in the national parks of the kingdom. There are more than ten of them, and each territory is a unique natural landscape. The Netherlands is characterized by plains overgrown with heather and called wastelands, sand dunes along the shores of the North Sea and small hills with rare pine groves or juniper thickets.

The fauna of Holland is not very diverse. Mammals are represented mainly by roe deer and red deer, foxes and wolves, squirrels and hares. The bird population is much richer and observation of the feathered representatives of the nature of Holland may be of some interest to fans of ornithology. In the Zvin nature reserve, for example, white storks nest and this is where you can visit a small zoo.
