One tenth of the territory of Abkhazia is occupied by nature conservation objects. They are of great importance for scientists studying the preglacial flora, which has been safely preserved and survived an unfavorable period of the geological era.

Ancient Colchis
On the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia there was once the land of ancient Colchis, where pre-glacial life forms have survived. Today, a unique reserve has been created here, on the territory of which one hundred species of plants grow, which are not found anywhere else on the planet.
The Pitsunda Peninsula and the adjacent lands of the Musser Upland have become home to more than eight hundred rare plants, two dozen of which are listed in the Red Book. On the territory of the Pitsundo-Mussera reserve of Abkhazia, there are relict pines and Colchis boxwood, strawberry tree and Iberian oak. The subtropical climate in the national park guarantees the possibility of visiting it at any time of the year.
Lakes and waterfalls
The main pride of the Ritsa National Park is Lake Bolshaya Ritsa, hidden in a deep wooded gorge. It can change color depending on the season, and trout and many other fish species live in its clear waters.
A special delight for visitors to this reserve of Abkhazia is the Gegsky waterfall, which falls from a 55-meter height in the form of a luxurious snow-white plume and dissolves in the canyon of the same name. Excursions to Lake Ritsa and the reserve are very popular with tourists vacationing on the beaches of Abkhazia. Little australia
Eucalyptus, typical of the distant green continent, feels great in the Pskhu-Gumista reserve of Abkhazia, founded in 1978 in the central part of the republic. Among other tree species, the eastern beech and Caucasian hornbeam, Colchis boxwood and black alder are protected here. Some trees are world record holders, and the diameter of the trunk of the Norman fir, for example, can reach two meters, and of the berry yew - one and a half meters.
