The modern flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a rectangular panel, the length of which is 3: 2 to the width. The flag of Vietnam features a bright yellow five-pointed star on a red background.
The history of the Vietnamese flag dates back to the early 19th century. Then the last prince of the dynasty Nguyen Zia Long, becoming the first emperor of Vietnam, creates the banner of the newly formed empire. Zia Long unites the country, which until then was actually scattered into northern and southern. The new empire's flag was bright yellow with a red circle in the center.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the cloth of the Nguyen dynasty takes on a slightly different appearance, and three thin red horizontal stripes appear on the yellow field. Then they are transformed into one, but much wider. The Japanese occupation in the 1940s brought significant changes, and the puppet Vietnamese Empire, created during the rule of the Land of the Rising Sun, raised a new flag. Its banner remains yellow, and the stripes take on a different pattern.
In August 1945, Japan was forced to surrender and withdraw its troops from Vietnam. Communists come to power, and state symbols are among the first to undergo changes. The flag of Vietnam turns bright red, with a five-pointed star in its center, slightly more rounded than on the modern flag.
Indochina wars and French colonization in the following decades split the country in two. North Vietnam remained a democratic republic, and the Vietnam War with the United States began in the south, which lasted until 1975. As a result of the victory of the northern provinces, all Vietnamese territories were unified, and on November 30, 1955, the new flag was officially approved as one of the state symbols. The yellow star on a red background has remained unchanged on the flag of the state ever since.
The red color of the flag symbolizes for today's residents of the country the blood of patriots shed for gaining independence and the fortitude and courage of the people of Vietnam. The five-pointed star is the personification of the common thoughts of the party with five main social groups: workers, peasants, intellectuals, youth and soldiers. These thoughts are aimed at building socialism, and along the way, the flag of Vietnam serves as a bright guiding star for its citizens.
