Castle of Castel Sant Antonio

Description of the attraction

Castel Sant Antonio is not well known among tourists, but nevertheless deserves attention. It is located at the very beginning of Bolzano's promenades.

The residential tower of Castel Sant Antonio, originally called Carnol, dates from the 13th century. It was erected at the confluence of Bolzano - Val Sarentino and San Genasio - Gris / San Maurizio. In ancient times, a bridge was built on this site across the Talvera River, which originates in the Val Sarentino valley.

In the 14th and 16th centuries, Castel Sant'Antonio was expanded several times. The complex included a chapel, a small church of St. Anthony and several living quarters. The castle received its present appearance in 1900 during the reign of Lords Schidmann. It was then that a round defensive wall with embrasures and loopholes, a second tower and a square gazebo were erected. Today Castel Sant Antonio attracts with its partly preserved and partly carefully restored old look.

In the same years, at the beginning of the 20th century, the castle got its modern name. The area of Bolzano, in which Castel Sant Antonio is located, is named after the chapel located on the territory of the castle. By the way, this is one of the oldest districts of the city and one of the greenest. This is where the pretty city promenades - Talvera and San Osvaldo - originate, ideal for leisurely walks. The castle is now owned by the Aufschneiter family, whose representatives live in it.
