Description of the attraction
Among the beautiful landscapes, at an altitude of 1500 m, is the monastery of St. George in Feneos. The monastery of St. George is called “new” to distinguish it from the “old” one, which was located below. The former monastery of St. George was founded in the 14th century by a Calavrite monk.
The relocation of the monastery to its present place was due to a rise in the water level in Lake Doxa at the end of the 17th century. Apparently, this was the largest rise in water in the entire history of the lake. The waters gradually flooded the old monastery, as a result of which the monks were forced to look for a safe place higher in the mountains. Only a small temple remained from the old monastery, located on an island in the middle of the lake. The church is connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land. According to experts, in a few years, due to soil corrosion, this isthmus will disappear and the church can only be reached by boat.
When moving from the former dwelling, the monks took with them the utensils, the altar and the entrance gate. Antique, 17-18 centuries, items have been perfectly preserved to this day and are used for their intended purpose.
During the revolution of 1821, the monastery served as the headquarters of the rebels under the leadership of Yiannakis Kolokotronis and the command center of the combined forces.
Today, only a few monks live in the monastery, who maintain the complex in good condition and make a specialty jam from the flowers growing on the territory.
