Description of the attraction

The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located on Karl Renner Promenade, is a monastery church owned by a community of Franciscan nuns. The monastery is located in a former residential building with a neo-Renaissance façade, which was built in 1877 and acquired by the diocese in 1885. A Romanesque-Gothic church was built next to this mansion in 1886, and at the same time the residential building was transformed into a monastery building. The main facade of the church with blind arches and a frieze enters the Karl-Renner-Promenade. The eastern side facade is decorated with buttresses and arched windows. The western facade of the church adjoins the monastery. A low slender turret rises above the roof of the temple.

The church houses a crucifix made in the second half of the 19th century. Also of great interest are the Baroque statues depicting St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and the Immaculate Virgin Mary. The sculptures date from the first half of the 18th century.

In 1917, two bells were removed from the temple for the needs of the army: the bell of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the bell of St. Joseph. Only three years later, the temple acquired new bells. They were replaced in 1942 by two items made of metal taken from military shells. Until now, these bells adorn the tower of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Divine services are held every Sunday in the church in Croatian. The local priest is loyal to the many tourists visiting his church. If he is lucky, he will even be able to give a tour, during which he will tell and show all the local sights.
