Description of the attraction

Lake Vransko is the largest lake in Croatia, geographically it is closest to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is only four kilometers east of Biograd na Moru, and ten kilometers northwest of Vodice. As a result, the western part of the lake belongs to Zadar County, and the eastern part to Sibenik-Kninska.

The total area of Lake Vranskoye is almost 31 sq. km, and its length is almost 14 kilometers with a width of just over two kilometers. The deepest lake is 4 meters. By its origin, Lake Vransko is a flooded karst cavity.

A feature of the lake is its extremely close location to the Adriatic Sea: they are separated by an isthmus, the width of which is from half to one and a half kilometers. The Adriatic highway runs along it. Not far from the northern end of Lake Vranskoye, on this isthmus, the village of Pakoshtane is located. The reservoir is elongated in the direction of the southeast from the northwest in parallel to the sea coast - its shape from above can be identified as oval. The lake is fed by streams, and the flow into the sea is carried out through a channel near the southeastern end of the reservoir, the width of which is no more than six hundred meters.

Lake Vransko is filled with fish, and a large number of wild birds come to nest on it, among which the colony of herons is of the greatest importance, which are carefully guarded by ornithologists.

A full-fledged natural park has been organized around the entire reservoir in order to be able to protect this natural landmark. Now it is included in 11 natural parks in Croatia.
