Hillaby Peak

Description of the attraction

Hillaby is the highest point of this beautiful Caribbean island. The peak is located in Scotland in the parish of St. Andrew. With the combination of hills, cliffs and some open areas of heather, it is somewhat reminiscent of the highlands of Scotland, except for the wonderful climate, great beaches and a complete lack of anything Scottish.

A fairly good road leads to the top, which greatly simplifies the journey. And from the peak there is a beautiful view to the east and a panorama of the Atlantic coast of Barbados. From here you can see the very beautiful beaches of Bathsheba, its famous bay with the best surfing in the Caribbean, and the chalk mountains in the distance. The outlook in other directions is obscured by the forest cover at the summit of the peak.

Here it becomes clear why the indigenous people of the island never used the interior of the island for life. From the summit, only a very thick dense jungle carpet with tall palms and rare signs of human habitation is visible. Looking from here, you get a very good idea of what the island was like before colonization and deforestation.

Geologically, Mount Hillaby and the area around it are composed of sandstone and chalk, with a core of volcanic rock. This sets the peak apart from the rest of the island, which is composed of ordinary coral limestone. The data on the height of Hillaby Peak range from 323 to 344 meters.
