Description of the attraction

The State Historical Museum-Reserve in the city of Novorossiysk is the largest museum on the Russian Black Sea coast.

The museum was founded in July 1916 thanks to the initiative of the vice-governor of the Black Sea province L. A. Senko-Popovsky as a museum of history and nature of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. The exposition was opened for visitors in December 1916. With the advent of Soviet power, the museum was transferred to the city council. The writer Gladkov F. V. took an active part in organizing the work of the museum and replenishing its collection. and director Meyerhold V. E.

Before the start of the Great Patriotic War, the Museum of Local Lore in Novorossiysk was the largest scientific and educational institution in the Kuban. The exposition of the museum was located in 16 halls. At that time, about 7 thousand exhibits were kept in the museum's funds, and in the scientific-historical library there were about 44 500 books. During the Great Patriotic War, almost all of the museum's collections were lost, the premises were destroyed, and the scientific library was also destroyed. Only a few boxes of archeological and documentary collections survived and were evacuated to the city of Tbilisi.

The revival of the museum began in January 1944. In May of the same year, the city executive committee allocated a room for the museum in a house on Kommunisticheskaya Street. After that, the evacuated exhibits were returned from Tbilisi. The museum opened its doors to visitors in November 1944. By 1948, there were already about 4435 exhibits in the museum's funds. In 1958, a new room was allocated for the museum on Sovetov Street, in which it is located to this day.

Over the years of its existence, the institution has repeatedly changed its name. In October 1987, the Museum of the History of the City and the State Museum of the 18th Army became part of the State Historical Museum-Reserve.

Stock collections, expositions and exhibitions of the museum give a versatile and complete picture of the history of the development of the city of Novorossiysk and the region, from the moment of the first settlements of people on the territory of this region to the present day.
