Description of the attraction
Castelfeder is an interesting protected natural area located above the town of Ora in Montagna in South Tyrol. It is an ideal place for walking and relaxation, famous for its unique landscapes known as the "Tyrolean Arcades". On the territory of Castelfeder you can find ponds and marshes, intricate rock formations and the ruins of an ancient castle, which gave the name to the entire area. This castle, built by the Byzantines in the Middle Ages as a fortress, stands on a hilltop at an altitude of 190 meters above sea level.
Castelfeder attracts adventurers big and small, hikers and rock climbers who can find interesting sites for themselves. During the walk, you can meet a variety of animals, however, most often goats come across. From the top of the hill on which the castle stands, there is a wonderful panorama of the Valle dell Adige, of Oltradige, Appiano and Caldaro all the way to Salorno. And throughout this territory are scattered numerous archaeological zones, finds in which date back to the second millennium BC, and small churches, from time immemorial considered sacred. The chapel of St. Barbara from the 6th century stands out in particular.
Due to the composition of the local soil, the flora of Castelfeder is quite unusual and is represented mainly by shrubs, such as the sub-Mediterranean low-stemmed. There are also upland and downstream meadow bogs that amaze travelers with their vegetation.
