Description of the attraction
The Hundertwasser House is located in the center of Vienna, but at some distance from the Old Town - for example, the distance to the Hofburg Palace is about two kilometers. You can get to this amazing house by metro, next to it there are Wien Mitte and Rochusgasse stops.
Residential building, not a museum
The house itself is an impressive building designed by the famous Austrian architect Hundertwasser. It's funny, but this house now functions as a residential and office building, although, of course, it is more popular with tourists due to its unique appearance.
Flight of the architect's fantasy
The main distinguishing feature of this house is the fact that it literally grows green spaces. Some trees sprouted from the very roof of this low building, and some plants were even planted in the rooms themselves or other rooms. The house also features brightly painted facades decorated with glazed tiles, colorful mosaics and ornaments. The whole building is characterized by the absence of straight lines, the wavy outline of the walls and windows of different shapes and sizes. All sorts of materials were used to create this building, including ceramics, glass and even wood. The construction was completed in 1986. Interestingly, Hundertwasser himself worked for free and refused the fee, arguing that he was simply glad that a typical "ugly" city building was not erected on this site. Thanks to its unique appearance, the Hundertwasser House has become a kind of "symbol" of Vienna.
It is interesting
- Many tourists believe that Hundertwasser was inspired by the ideas of the great Gaudi, but evidence of this has not yet been found. However, like Gaudí, Hundertwasser often used ceramic tiles.
- In the immediate vicinity of the Hundertwasser House, there are other buildings by the same architect. For example, the Hundertwasser Village trade and exhibition center, opposite the famous house. Inside this center, a small town is being recreated, decorated in the eccentric style typical of the master. Here you can buy a variety of Hundertwasser souvenirs.
- The favorite animal of this amazing artist and architect was a snail with a house on its back.
