Description of the attraction
The National Art Museum of Catalonia was formed in 1990 as a result of the amalgamation of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Museum of Catalonia. The museum is located in the building of the National Palace (Palau Nacional), which was built for the opening of the first World Exhibition in 1929 and is located at the foot of the Montjuic mountain.
The museum has a huge collection of works from various fields of art, covering a long period of time. Here are the collections of the Romanesque period in art, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque. The collection of romanticism gathered in this museum is the largest in the world. Here are the outstanding works of that time, recognized as truly unique. Particularly striking is the collection of wall paintings - frescoes. The exposition of works of the Gothic period of the 13-15th centuries is represented by painting, stone sculptures, stone and wood carvings, amazing stained-glass windows. The Renaissance and Baroque periods, which were some of the brightest, but at the same time not the most significant in the art of Catalonia, are represented by the works of prominent Spanish, Flemish, Italian artists. Among them are the works of Goya, Velazquez, Rubens, El Greco and others. The National Museum of Art also has an exposition of contemporary art of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, which includes paintings, photographs, and examples of applied art. In this exhibition there is a famous painting by Pablo Picasso "Woman with a hat and a fur collar."
There is also a collection of coins, medals and paper money, as well as a collection of prints and drawings. There is an art and universal library at the museum, restoration work is also carried out here.
