Description of the attraction

Lustenau is a city in Austria, located in the western part of the Vorarlberg province on the Rhine River, along which the border with Switzerland passes. The whole city is located in a valley, with a total height of 404 meters above sea level.

The first written records of Lustenau date back to 887, when the Carolingians ruled here. Until 1806, the city was under the rule of the Habsburgs, and in 1814, after the Congress of Vienna, Lustenau became an Austro-Hungarian city. In the 19th century, Lustenau became one of the centers of the Austrian textile industry, as it has long been famous for its linen fabrics, as well as magnificent embroidery and lace.

Lustenau has a long and successful history in sports. Two city football teams play in the Austrian Football League. The famous and successful skier Mark Girardelli is from Lustenau. The hockey team also shows excellent results every year.

Lustenau's cultural life is quite eventful. Open-air concerts and fairs are held annually. Since 1975, jazz concerts have been regularly organized by the Lustenau Jazz Club. Many performers became famous precisely because of this jazz festival (Dexter Gordon, Michelle Petrucciani, Chet Baker).

Lustenau has suffered from floods in the past centuries. In different periods, many churches were destroyed, which later began to be built from stone. The most severe damage to Lustenau was caused by the floods of 1206 and 1548.

The main attractions include the Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul, built in 1875 by Alois Negrelli, the chapel of Maria Loretto - the oldest religious building in the Baroque style, built in 1645, the Embroidery Museum, where old hand and modern machine embroidery patterns, as well as embroidery equipment are exhibited, there is also the Rhine Museum …
