Description of the attraction
Kourion is one of the most ancient and famous ancient city-states of Cyprus. It is located very close to modern Limassol on a 70-meter hill. It was built back in the XII century BC by the Mycenaeans - one of those who took part in the legendary Trojan War. The city existed for quite a long time, and throughout its history it belonged to different peoples: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines. Unfortunately, in the 4th century it was completely destroyed by a powerful earthquake.
This ancient city has been exciting the minds of scientists not only in Cyprus, but also in other countries for a long time. For the first time its ruins were discovered in the 19th century, and constant excavations in this place have been carried out since the beginning of the 30s of the last century and continue to this day.
Although Kourion has survived to this day much better than other ancient cities of the island, only a few structures remained on its territory, the purpose of which was not difficult to determine. For example, there you can see the ruins of the main city gates, which were named Paphos. Not far from them there is a building that has received the name "Mosaic of Achilles" due to the clearly distinguishable mosaic patterns on its walls and floors, depicting scenes of heroic deeds of the famous Greek. This building itself is a complex of several small buildings arranged in a rectangle, and in the center there is a large open courtyard. Basically, in Kourion, you can see only the remains of walls and foundations of residential buildings, administrative buildings and fortifications.
However, the most interesting attraction of the city is the well-preserved amphitheater, a visit to which will leave a lot of impressions. Its upper stands offer a beautiful view of the surroundings and, in addition, performances are still held there.
