Description of the attraction

One of the attractions of Krivoy Rog is the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. This new temple was erected on the site of the previously destroyed Intercession Church and is a smaller copy of it. The exact date of the construction of the temple is unknown, but, according to historical data, the Intercession Church was consecrated in October 1886 on the day of the Orthodox holiday of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, in honor of which it received its name.

The site for the construction of the new church was chosen quite well. The church, built on a small hill, was visible from everywhere. The dimensions of the Intercession Church were also striking. The height of its bell tower reached 29 m, length - 34 m, and width - 21 m. The large dome of the church was crowned with a two-meter cross. The famous artist E. Kruchinin was involved in decorating the interior of the temple. Thanks to its beauty, decoration and architectural merits, the Intercession Church has become one of the best architectural structures of the Kherson province. The church gained great popularity at the end of the 19th century, becoming a major cultural and educational center, after which one of the best literacy schools in the province was opened here.

The first attack on the temple took place immediately after the October coup. In 1922, all his property was simply plundered. In 1926, the Intercession Church ceased its work. In the 30s, the bells of the temple were removed and sent for melting. In the pre-war years, the temple was used by the authorities as a warehouse. During the occupation of the city by the Germans, services in the church were resumed and continued even after the liberation of the city until the 60s. In the 60s, the destruction of churches all over the country began, and in 1964 the Intercession Church was simply blown up.

The construction of the new church began in 1999, and a year later the dome was raised and a cross was installed. On April 21, 2001, the consecration of the new Holy Intercession Church was held - a symbol of repentance and spiritual revival of the city.
