Description of the attraction

The Bedem fortress was built by the Turks, who, after the capture of Niksic, made the city their defensive line. Initially, it was this fortress that was the predecessor of the city. In 1518, the first mention of the Bedem fortress was recorded. To this day, ruins have remained from the fortress in the vicinity of modern Niksic.

By the way, the city got its name during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Prior to this, this area changed several names: the Romans built a settlement here together with a fortified camp called Anagastam, and in the Middle Ages, when this region was occupied by the Slavs, the city was named Onogosht.

In 1877, the city was liberated from Turkish rule, after which Niksic gradually began to become an urban settlement, since there was no need for a defensive fortification. Freed from the Turks, the city began to live a new life, attracting new settlers.

The ruins of the Bedem fortress built by the Turks are now protected by the state as a national historical monument. Relatively recently, the citadel complex has undergone restoration, after which its area has reached several hectares. The fortress is located on a hill overlooking the Niksici valley and sheer cliffs.
