Description of the attraction

The Ivan Poddubny Museum in the city of Yeysk is the only memorial museum in Russia dedicated to the outstanding fighter I. M. Poddubny. The opening of the museum took place in 1971 and was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.

THEM. Poddubny is a six-time world champion in French wrestling, holder of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, Honored Artist of the RSFSR. In 1927 he came to the city of Yeisk and lived here until the end of his life.

The museum tells its visitors about the life and work of this most interesting person. The museum hall is designed in the form of a circus tent, and this is no coincidence, since all the competitions of strongmen and wrestlers that were held in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. took place in the circus arena.

The surviving authentic things were transferred to the museum by the relatives of Ivan Maksimovich, and many were brought by the Voronezh collector Potokin, who was studying the history of wrestling and everything that was associated with I. Poddubny. In total, the museum has more than 2 thousand exhibits.

In addition to genuine posters, training clothes of a world champion, sports equipment, there is a rare and unusual exhibit here - a belt designed for Russian belt wrestling, which existed before French wrestling (now Greco-Roman). From the photographs collected in the museum, one can understand how the wrestling fights took place.

Another interesting exhibit is a 1905 bill with the inscription: “Gift to I. М. Poddubny in a minute of the French struggle. Before entering the arena, Poddubny offered those who wanted to fight him in a duel. He handed over a souvenir to those who withstood a minute.

Also in the museum you can see a luxurious oriental robe embroidered by hand. His wrestler put on when entering the arena. There was also an umbrella with which Poddubny always went fishing, and much more.

The Ivan Poddubny Museum regularly hosts various thematic excursions, theatrical events and game programs.
