Description of the attraction

The ensemble of the Assumption Church in Lviv is an outstanding monument of the Renaissance architecture of the 16th-17th centuries. In addition to the church itself, the ensemble of the Assumption Church also includes a bell tower, known as the Kornyakt tower, as well as the chapel of the Three Saints.

This is the fourth church built on this site. The previous ones were destroyed by fires and time. The current building was completed in 1591. It was erected by Paul the Roman with assistants - Wojciech Kapinos and Ambrosius Prihilny. The construction of the temple was completed in 1629.

The Assumption Church consists of three white-stone buildings - the main part, the altar and the vestibule, located on the same level. The church ends with three domes with lanterns. The central dome is raised by arches supported by four columns.

The interior of the Assumption Church is decorated with paintings of the 17th-18th centuries, there is an iconostasis from 1773, on the windows there are stained-glass windows by P. Kholodny (1920s and 1930s). The central dome of the temple is decorated with caissons with rosettes, and in its sails there is a stone carving with the coats of arms of the ktitors.

The Chapel of the Three Saints, which is part of the Dormition Church ensemble, is connected to the church itself on the north side. The chapel was built in 1578-1590, after the second fire of the Assumption Church itself. But in 1671 the chapel burned down. It was restored by Aleksey Balaban, a member of the Assumption Brotherhood. The architecture of this building clearly shows the features of Ukrainian national architecture.

The ensemble of the Assumption Church is completed by a bell tower built in 1572-1578. The founder of this bell tower was the Greek merchant Konstantin Kornyakt. The bell tower (or Kornyakt tower) is a square tower under a baroque dome. It was built by the architect Peter Barbon and included three tiers, while the fourth was added in 1695 by Peter Beber along with the Baroque completion.
