Description of the attraction
Liechtenstein Palace was built in the early 18th century as a summer residence for the Liechtenstein family. Today it houses a museum that displays a private collection of painting and sculpture in a sumptuous Baroque setting.
Built in the Baroque style, the palace is considered one of the most beautiful in the city. Johann von Erlach, Rossi, Martinelli worked on the creation of the palace, conceived by Prince Andreas I von Liechtenstein as the summer residence of the family.
The princely house of Liechtenstein was one of the wealthiest aristocratic families in Vienna. In the 17th century, they already had a palace in the city center, known as the Stadtpalais Liechtenstein (city palace), where the family lived during the winter. The construction of the second, summer palace began in 1692. Everything inside was decorated very nicely: on the ground floor there was a large hall, the ceilings of which were painted with frescoes by I. Rotmayr. In addition to him, the talented master Andrea Pozzo worked on the frescoes. All stucco moldings were made by S. Busi. The walls of the palace were decorated with paintings by Franceschini. The work was completed in 1709. In 1910, a unique library was brought to the palace.
Already in 1805, the Liechtenstein family opened a private collection to the public. During World War II, the collection was removed from the palace. The museum was reopened in 2004 after extensive renovation.
Currently, the collection of the museum includes about 1,500 paintings. Among them are works by Rubens (at least 30 paintings), Raphael, A. van Dyck, Rembrandt. The palace houses a collection of furniture, Italian bronze and weapons. In the museum you can admire the beautifully restored stucco and magnificent frescoes by the Austrian painter Johann Michael Rothmair. Particularly noteworthy are the grand staircases and beautiful frescoes, as well as the magnificent Baroque hall faced with red marble.
