Description of the attraction
The Church of St. John Chrysostom is one of the architectural adornments of the city of Sochi, located on Mount Bytkha in the microdistrict of the same name of the resort.
The community of the temple was created back in 2000, and earlier services were held in a room specially adapted for this. And only a few years later, at the expense of patrons and local residents, it was decided to build a new church.
The project of this five-domed church in the neo-Byzantine style was developed by the architect F. I. Afuksenidi in 2003-2005. In 2005, the construction of the church itself began. The basis for the space-planning solution of the church was the cross-domed system, which is classical for Orthodox churches. The Church of St. John Chrysostom has two central vaults, forming a cross in plan. At the intersection of the vaults, there are four pillars that symbolize the four apostles. A drum of light with a dome symbolizing Christ rests on these pillars. The church bell tower was designed to be free-standing. The monumental architecture is done with a minimum of decor. The walls of the church are built of bricks, and the ceiling, cores and vaults are made of monolithic reinforced concrete.
Today the Church of St. John Chrysostom is a functioning Russian Orthodox church that can accommodate up to 300 parishioners. The baptismal is located in the basement of the church. The church has a Sunday school and a parish library with Orthodox literature.
