Description of the attraction
The picturesque island of Skopelos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands. Besides the magnificent natural landscapes, Skopelos is also famous for the abundance of beautiful monasteries and churches.
Perhaps the most famous and charming temple of the island is the Church of St. John, which is located on the northern coast of Skopelos, about 8 km from the town of Glossa and 30 km from the capital. The church is located at an altitude of 100 m above sea level on a picturesque steep cliff, to the top of which 105 stone steps lead.
The exact date of the foundation of the church is not known for certain. According to local legend, one evening one of the local residents noticed a mysterious glow on the top of the cliff, but did not attach much importance to it. In a dream, he saw a woman who told him to climb along with other inhabitants of the island on a rock and find an icon there. To reach the top, people had to cut steps right in the rock. The icon was indeed found and taken to a nearby church. The next day, the shrine mysteriously found itself on the top of the cliff again. Then it was decided to build a church here.
The island of Skopelos and the Church of St. John gained their worldwide fame thanks to the famous Hollywood film "Mamma Miya", many of the scenes from which were filmed in this amazing place. From the top of the cliff, there are stunning panoramic views of the coast of Skopelos and the island of Alonissos. The interior of the temple is decorated with beautiful icons and old church relics. There is an excellent beach next to the cliff, attracting with its picturesque landscapes and crystal-clear turquoise water.
Every year, a huge number of tourists from all over the world come to Skopelos Island. St. John's Church is one of the most visited attractions on the island. This temple is especially popular among those wishing to get married.
