Description of the attraction
Cathedral of Toledo - one of the six largest Christian churches in Europe, a masterpiece of Gothic art. Its construction, begun under Ferdinand III in 1227, was completed only in the 15th century. This is evidenced by the main facade with three high portals. In the center is the Door of Forgiveness, decorated with numerous statues. Inside, the huge space formed by five naves and powerful columns are striking.
The most luxurious part of the cathedral is the altar. Here you will find a huge image of Christ, royal tombs and a magnificent flaming Gothic altarpiece. The choir has beautiful 15th and 16th century benches. The organs date back to the 18th century. The treasury of the cathedral is in the chapel of St. James. A remarkable piece of Spanish jewelry art is a monstrance more than one and a half meters long, for the manufacture of which 18 kg of gold and 183 kg of silver were used.
The white walls of the sacristy of the cathedral are decorated with genuine masterpieces created by such masters as El Greco, Goya, Titian, Velazquez, Morales, Van Dyck, Raphael, Rubens. This is the statue of the "White Madonna" of the XIV century.
