Description of the attraction
The Opera de Monte Carlo is a theater that is part of the Monte Carlo Casino, located in the Principality of Monaco. In the early 1870s, there was no cultural life in Monaco, and by the decision of Prince Charles III, a concert hall was included in the casino complex under construction. The general entrance for visitors was from the casino and was connected by a hall made of red marble. The monarch's personal entrance was located on the west side.
The Concert Hall was inaugurated in 1879 and was named "Salé Garnier" after the architect Charles Garnier, who designed and implemented the project. The first performance, which took place within the walls of the new theater, was the play by Sarah Bernhardt in the form of a nymph. Opera "Chevalier Gaston" by Robert Plunkett, staged on February 8, 1879, premiered on this stage and was a great success.
Designed for 524 people, the opera house was built in just eight and a half months. Its style and rich decorations, intricate and intricate façade were influenced by the Parisian "Grand Opera" by Garnier, many artists worked on the decoration of these two theaters.
The concert hall of the Monte Carlo casino was not originally intended for opera, but after the popularization of this type of theatrical art, it was reconstructed by Henri Schmitt in 1898-99. The main work was carried out with the stage, bringing it into a form more suitable for an opera.
"Golden Age" "Sale Garnier" fell on the late 19th - early 20th century. For almost a century and a half of its existence, about 100 world premieres have taken place on the stage of the opera house.
