Description of the attraction

The most important historical attraction for which Aalborg is famous is the Gothic Cathedral of St. Budolph. This is one of the oldest structures in Denmark. The church dates back to the 10th century.

It was originally built in the Romanesque style in honor of Saint Budolphus, the patron saint of all sailors. In the XIV century, the cathedral was destroyed, only the foundation remained from the structure itself. Wealthy traders and merchants raised funds and after a while a new church for parishioners was erected on the site of the destroyed temple.

Inside the Cathedral of St. Budolph, there are well-preserved frescoes from the 16th century. In 1689, at the expense of Niels Espersen and his wife, an altar was erected, decorated with their coats of arms. In 1779 a baroque spire was added to the temple. The spire was built with funds bequeathed by brother and sister Jacob and Elizabeth Himmery. Inside the cathedral, the walls are decorated with portraits of patrons, whose donations were used to decorate the interior of the temple. The baptismal font of 1728 and the pulpit of 1692 attract particular attention of visitors.

The Cathedral of Saint Budolph is surrounded by magnificent historical sights such as the House of Jensa Bang, the Town Hall, the Historical Museum, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. Today the temple is one of the most famous and important historical monuments in Denmark. Every year the Cathedral of St. Budolph is visited by a large number of tourists from all over the world.
