Description of the attraction

The Nativity of the Mother of God Monastery was founded in the 14th century by the holy Archbishop Theodore, the nephew of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Stone construction began during the governorship of Iona Sysoevich at the end of the 17th century.

The first stone church was built in the name of the Nativity of the Virgin. The large two-storey building, in addition to places for prayers, has a spacious refectory. The cathedral itself was rebuilt several times, and in 1715 the walls of the temple were decorated with two tiers of frescoes in honor of the Mother of God.

The cell buildings, the monastery fence and the Church of the Tikhchin Icon of the Mother of God, built in the 19th century, have survived to this day. At the end of the 20th century, the building of the Nativity of the Mother of God Monastery was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Now this convent is active and is protected by the state as a monument. Restoration work is being actively carried out on its territory.

Next to the monastery is the Church of St. Nicholas on Podozerie. Almost all of it has a silvery domed finish, and only in its western part there is a small extension crowned with a small golden dome.
