Description of the attraction

Lake Abrau is the largest freshwater lake in the Krasnodar Territory. It is located 14 km west of the city of Novorossiysk, on the Abrau Peninsula. The total area of the lake is 1.6 sq. km..

The lake is fraught with many mysteries associated with its origin. Some scientists argue that its basin is the remnant of the ancient Cimmerian freshwater basin that existed on the site of the Black Sea more than one million years ago, others that it was formed as a result of a karst failure, and still others associate the appearance of this mysterious lake with huge landslides - landslides formed at very low sea level.

The waters of Lake Abrau have a peculiar emerald hue. There is no coniferous frame or sky-high mountains, but despite this, the lake has a very picturesque view. Maples and oaks grow on the coastal ridges.

Earlier, on the site of the reservoir, the Adyghe settlement of Abragyo or Echekh was located, which means "failed" in translation. From the Abkhaz Abrau-Dyurso, it is translated as "the failure of four sources", and from the ancient Iranian as "water", transparent as the sky. " Today, however, the lake is not very transparent. Its visibility is approximately one meter.

Lake Abrau is one of the few cultivated lakes where there is a boat dock, a hotel, and the shores are cleared of wild thickets. In summer it is very warm here, so many tourists come here. In addition to all this, Lake Abrau is the only source of agricultural, industrial, domestic and drinking water supply for the village. That is why protecting the lake from pollution is a top priority.

At the end of 1974, Lake Abrau was declared a natural monument.
