Description of the attraction
About 11 km from the capital of the same name, Thassos, on the slopes of its highest mountain, Ipsario (1203 m), there is a small mountain village Potamia. This traditional Greek settlement is located in an amazingly picturesque place. The inhabitants of Potamia are mainly engaged in agriculture and are also engaged in the tourism sector.
Potamya is surrounded by greenery, traditional stone houses, labyrinths of narrow streets, several charming churches, an amazing atmosphere of peace and tranquility and, of course, the hospitality and cordiality of local residents. Here you will find a small but decent selection of cozy hotels and apartments. Local taverns and cafes with excellent traditional cuisine will also delight.
You should definitely visit the main attraction of Potamya - the Vagis Museum, dedicated to the native of Thassos, the Greek-American sculptor Polygnotos Vagis (this is a very famous sculptor in the USA, whose works are presented in several American museums). Here you will find a magnificent collection of 20th century works of art.
One of the roads leads from Potamya up into the mountains, offering truly delightful landscapes on its way. Lovers of long walks can climb Ipsario, from the top of which stunning panoramic views of the island and endless sea openings open.
On the coast, just 3 km from Potamya, there is a port town and the popular resort of Thassos - Skala Potamia with a well-developed tourist infrastructure and a beautiful beach area. There is also the famous "Golden Beach" - the owner of the honorary "blue flag" of UNESCO.
