Description of the attraction
The Church of the Intercession on Lyshchikova Gora is one of the few in Moscow that did not stop its activity even in Soviet times. Despite the fact that the valuables were confiscated in the 1920s, and in the 1930s his priests and members of the church council were arrested, the temple was not closed. On the contrary, during the Great Patriotic War, the parishioners of the church were even awarded a letter of thanks signed by Joseph Stalin for collecting a considerable amount and donating it to the defense fund. At the end of the last century, the Intercession Church acquired the relics of the priest Roman Medved, who in the 30s was arrested, exiled to a camp and died in 1937. At the end of the twentieth century, he was glorified as a new martyr.
The first Intercession Church was built on the territory of the Intercession Monastery, located on Lyshchikovaya Gora on the left bank of the Yauza. The monastery was first in the grand ducal, and then in the royal maintenance. The monastery, together with the lands and property, was inherited from the princes to their sons. The first mention of this monastery dates back to the 80s of the 15th century.
At the end of the 16th century, a new line of city fortifications began to be erected around Moscow - Zemlyanoy Val, and Lyshchikova Gora became part of this embankment, and the Intercession Monastery found itself on the territory of Zemlyanoy Gorod and stood almost at the very wall of Skorodom - another city defensive structure.
In the Time of Troubles, the wooden Skorod was burned, the fire element "grabbed" and the Intercession Monastery. The restoration of the fortification in the form of an earthen rampart began in 1638. These works were led by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, and on the territory of the Intercession Church, then already a parish, the Sukharev Strelets Regiment was stationed.
By the end of the 17th century, the church, damaged in a fire, fell into disrepair, and in 1695-1697 it was rebuilt in stone with a two-tiered bell tower and a porch. In the next century, the church burned twice, and at the end of the 18th century, its restoration began again. The work was interrupted due to the outbreak of the Patriotic War and the invasion of Moscow by the French. The unfinished church was plundered. Divine services were resumed in it already in 1814.
Today, the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is a functioning temple and cultural heritage site located in Lyshchikov Lane.
