Description of the attraction
Overlooking the city and the river, the majestic Heidelberg Castle of the Counts Palatine Wittelsbach is a whole complex of buildings, mainly of the Renaissance and early Baroque (XIV-XVII centuries). In the 18th century, as a result of the city fire, the castle burned and was not restored - the dynasty lost its influence, became impoverished, and the castle fell into desolation. Only in the 19th century, the city authorities began to take measures to preserve the complex, to restore some of its parts.
In the middle of the 16th century, Elector Otto-Heinrich built himself a palace here, and the height of the floors of this building was different. The festive hall was located on the ground floor. Now this building houses the German Pharmacy Museum.
Friedrich's Palace - one of the youngest parts of the castle, dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. The palace is decorated with statues of members of the Wittelsbach family, including Emperor Charlemagne. And the oldest parts of the castle - Ruprechtsbau and Pulwerthurm tower - date back to the 14th century.
Every summer a theater and music festival is held in the castle and castle park. Classical and modern plays, operas and musicals are played against the backdrop of the most romantic scenery.
