Description of the attraction
Mount Pantokrator (translated from Greek means "Lord Almighty") is located in the northeast of the island of Corfu. Its height is 906 meters above sea level and it is the highest mountain on the island. From the top of the mountain, a stunning panoramic view opens not only of the entire island, but also of neighboring Albania. And on clear sunny days, you can even see the coastline of Italy from here, despite the fact that it is located 130 km from the island of Corfu.
At the very top of the mountain, there is a small cozy cafe for tourists, where you can relax after climbing, and then explore the surroundings and enjoy the impressive panoramic views. Telecommunication towers and an ancient monastery are also located here. The first religious building was built on this site back in 1347, but in 1537 the temple was destroyed for unknown reasons. The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which we see today, dates from around 1689, although the facade of the building was built already in the 19th century. In the church you can see magnificent old frescoes.
You can climb to the top of Mount Pantokrator both on foot and by car. There are several hiking trails, the most convenient of which lead to the monastery. It is best to start the ascent from the village of Staraya Perita, which is the oldest village on the island and dates back to the 14th century. The hike will take about two hours. When traveling by car, it is worth considering that the road is very narrow and has many sharp turns.
