Description of the attraction
The Kazimar Grand Mosque is the first Islamic mosque in the city of Madurai and is located right in its center. It was built by order of the descendant of the Prophet Muhammad Nazrat Kazi Sid Tajiddin back in the 13th century, after his arrival in this city from Oman.
The Grand Mosque of Kazimar is a huge complex built in the style typical of Muslim religious buildings. Along the perimeter, it is surrounded by a high wall of light yellow color, decorated with small turrets and carved borders, and at the gate leading to the courtyard there are tall snow-white minarets. The mosque itself is a large one-story building and can simultaneously accommodate up to 2,500 worshipers.
On the territory of the building there are dargakhs (tombs) of the famous Madurai Khazrats (religious Muslim title) - Mir Ahamad Ibrahim, Mir Amjad Ibrahim, Sida Abdus Salam Ibrahim. All of them were descendants of the Prophet Muhammad and were directly involved in the management of the mosque.
Kazimar is a real shrine for the Sunnis not only in Madurai, but throughout India. It is believed that since the tombs of the descendants of the great prophet are located on its territory, the requests made there will certainly be fulfilled by Allah. People also believe that the priests of the mosque have the ability to heal, so after the morning prayer, a large crowd gathers at its gate, waiting for them to come out and bless.
