Description of the attraction
City Ramparts is the territory behind the Potocki Palace in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. Initially, the ramparts were part of the defensive fortifications of the impregnable fortress Stanislav. This fortress was so well fortified that it was able to effectively withstand the huge Turkish army in 1672.
The ramparts were created artificially, namely, they were poured by hand in order to create an impressive foundation for the castle. Their width was 20-30 meters. The owners of the city wanted their castle to rise above the rest of the city's buildings. In addition, the ramparts played a defensive role. On their basis, walls of impressive height were built of oak logs, and two fortified bastions. The bastions made it possible to fire weapons along the walls. In 1734-1750, the log palisade was replaced with stone and brick ones. Then the height of the walls reached ten meters, from the outside they were complemented by ramparts.
To date, little has remained of its former greatness. At the beginning of the 19th century, the walls were demolished, and later a park with the symbolic name "Hetman Walls" was laid out on this place. Now the city ramparts are a small park in which the Ascension monument is installed.
