Description of the attraction
Santorini's Catholic Cathedral is very different from many of its Byzantine neighbors. The Cathedral dedicated to John the Baptist was built in 1823 in the Catholic part of Fira. Peach-colored walls, atypical appearance and size make it visible from afar.
The baroque building is decorated with an amazing multi-level tower with graceful stucco decoration, gratings, a balustrade and a clock on the upper tiers, proudly towering over the city. The interior of the temple is decorated with large paintings of religious themes, framed by columns. The inner covering of the dome is lilac-blue, different parts of the interior are painted in orange and cream shades.
The church was badly damaged as a result of a natural disaster in 1956; reconstruction was carried out in 1975.
