Description of the attraction
The city fortifications of the city of Poreč are a system of fortifications built in the 12th-16th centuries, which surrounded the city until the 17th century inclusive. Subsequently, the city expanded, and part of the fortifications were destroyed.
Today we can see the few surviving towers of this defensive complex. The most significant of the surviving towers are the Pentagonal, Round and Semicircular.
The pentagonal tower was built in 1447. This is the oldest surviving tower. It is made in the Gothic style and in the past (before the French invasion at the beginning of the 19th century) it was connected to the city gate leading to the center of Porec along Decumanus Street. This street was a classic Roman street and led from east to west. A Venetian lion is depicted on the facade of the Pentagonal Tower.
The round tower of the Poreč city fortifications was built in 1473. It is open for inspection as it is perfectly preserved. The semicircular tower was erected in 1475. Together with the Round Tower, it is located not far from the People's Square of Porec.
