Description of the attraction

The monument in honor of the Russian statesman and military leader, Field Marshal General and the founder of many cities, including Nikolaev, Prince Grigory Potemkin, was erected on September 21, 2007 in the Proletarsky Park of Nikolaev. The monument is located among thick old spruce trees, in front of the entrance of the State Enterprise “Shipbuilding Plant named after the 61st Communards”, which is located along Naberezhnaya Street.

The decision to erect this monument here was not accidental, since the plant named after the 61st Communards was the first shipyard in the city. According to many historians, it was at this place that Prince Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin decided to build the first ships, thereby determining the future fate of the city. The name of the city was given by Prince G. Potemkin himself in honor of the victory he won in the battle with Turkish troops near Ochakov on the day of St. Nicholas.

A bust of an outstanding figure of the Russian Empire of the 18th century was carved out of labradorite by a young Nikolayev sculptor Viktor Makushin. The monument is made in the classical style, the pedestal and stylobate of the monument are carved from the strongest colored granite of Takovo. The total height of the monument is 3 meters, and the sculpture itself is 0.8 meters.

In order to open the monument to Grand Duke Grigory Potemkin, contributions were collected. The customer for the erection of the monument was the city administration of capital construction, repair and reconstruction. Many residents of the city came to the grand opening of the monument to G. Potemkin, as well as guests - the former head of the region Leonid Sharaev and people's deputies. The monument was consecrated by the Archbishop of Nikolaev and Voznesensk Pitirim.

In honor of His Serene Highness Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky, one of the central streets of the city of Nikolaev bears its name and a memorial plaque is installed.
